      Dr. Venkataraman Raghavan (1908-1979) was a highly respected and prolific Sanskritist and Indian musicologist, particularly focusing on Carnatic music. Besides being a prolific scholarly writer, he also served on many scholarly committees and edited several journals, such as the Journal of Oriental Research and the Journal of the Music Academy, Madras. In 1953 he was awarded the Kane Gold Medal by the Asiatic Society, and in 1962 President Sri Rajendra Prasad gave him the Padma Bhushan award in the field of literature and education.
