    Ulric Dahlgren was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1842, the son of John A. Dahlgren and the nephew of Charles G. Dahlgren. He worked as a civil engineer before joining the US Navy when the American Civil War broke out in 1861, and he soon transferred to the US Army. He fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and at the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Brandy Station, and the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, and he lost his foot on 6 July 1863 after being wounded while trying to reach Hagerstown, Maryland. He became a colonel on 24 July 1863, and, on 18 February 1864, he took part in Judson Kilpatrick's raid on the Richmond area of northern Virginia. On 2 March 1864, he was killed in action, and papers found on his body relating to an assassination plot against President Jefferson Davis led to a controversy which motivated John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in April 1865.
