J. P. Taylor notes that “Marshal Tito was the last Habsburg.”2 According to the writer Stanko Lasić, Tito was a hypocritical pragmatist, an extremely determined and skilled politician and a statesman who knew how to use his strength and turn defeats into a victory.3 For political emigrants, he was a Machiavellian, cruel communist di

      Presentation - Howard Clark

Howard’s application to the Albert Einstein Institution had been circulated in advance and formed the basis of his presentation. He identified four phases in the Kosovo/a story he would be dealing with. The issues he would be taking up were non-provocation, civil resistance and its relationship to the constructive programme, and dialogue and coexistence.

Milošević during this period was banging the drum over Kosovo/a which has a special mythic importance for Serbs. In 1989, the six- hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Kosova, the bones -supposedly - of King Lazar, wh
